Fungus Among Us: What Liberty Lawn is Seeing In Lawns

Here at Liberty Lawn, we're all about keeping your Minnesota lawn lush, green, and healthy. But sometimes, unwelcome guests crash the party – in this case, fungal diseases. These imposters can wreak havoc on your beautiful turf, leaving unsightly patches and hindering growth.

This summer, we've been seeing an increase in two particularly nasty fungal culprits: blight and rust. Let's take a closer look at these lawn saboteurs:

The Blight Brigade:

  • Symptoms:  Look for large, sunken patches of brown or yellow grass.  The blades may appear wilted or shriveled.

  • Cause:  Several fungal villains can cause blight, often triggered by excessive moisture, poor drainage, and compacted soil.

The Rusty Rascals:

  • Symptoms:   Yellow or orange pustules on blades of grass, sometimes accompanied by stunted growth.

  • Cause:   Rust fungi thrive in cool, damp conditions and can spread quickly through windblown spores.

Why We Don't Recommend Fungicide Blitzkrieg

While fungicides exist, here at Liberty Lawn, we generally advise against them as a first resort.  Here's why:

  • Collateral Damage:   Fungicides often indiscriminately kill both harmful and beneficial fungi in the soil. These beneficial microbes play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy lawn ecosystem. Wiping them out can leave your lawn more susceptible to future fungal invasions.

  • Focus on Prevention:    A healthy lawn with good drainage and proper fertilization is naturally more resistant to fungal diseases. We recommend focusing on cultural practices like core aeration, dethatching, and watering deeply and infrequently to create a thriving lawn environment.
